In a surprise turn of events, Venezuela's electoral authorities announced Nicolas Maduro for the winner of a third presidential term. The announcement came in the early hours, despite many exit polls showing the opposition leading, Reuters reported. The development has sparked a wave of discussion and debate about the future of Venezuela and its political landscape, BTA reports.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Venezuela's electoral authorities to publish detailed voting results in last night's election to ensure transparency and accountability, Reuters reported.
"The United States congratulates the Venezuelan people for participating in the July 28 presidential election despite significant challenges and deep concerns about the process," Blinken said in a statement.
"Now that voting is over, it is vital that every vote is counted fairly and transparently," he added.
