Estonia will introduce full customs controls on its eastern border with Russia from August 8. This was decided by the government of the Baltic EU and NATO state in Tallinn, quoted by News.bg.
According to the decision, controls at the road and rail border crossings in Narva, Koidula and Luhamaa will be introduced gradually and will replace the current checks on passengers and vehicles, which are based on a risk assessment.
According to Prime Minister Kristen Michal, this is aimed at preventing the transit and transport of goods subject to EU sanctions through Estonia and to strengthen the country's security, DPA reports.
"Unfortunately, attempts to circumvent sanctions and continue transporting prohibited goods across our borders continue, just as the brutal war that Russia has launched against Ukraine and its people continues," Michal said.
The government believes that by introducing comprehensive controls on goods, it will make it more difficult to circumvent sanctions and supply Russia's military machine.
