15-year-old arrested in connection with deadly attack in Solingen

Prosecutors do not rule out terrorism-related incident

A knife attack in the German city of Solingen that killed a man is possible three people and wounded eight others during a local festival, to be a “terrorist act”, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA, referring to a statement from the prosecutor's office.

„Terrorism cannot be ruled out as no other motive is known and as the victims do not appear to be related (to each other),” Markus Kaspers of the Dusseldorf prosecutor's office said at a press conference today.

The search for the unknown assailant continues. Earlier today, police said they had detained a 15-year-old and were investigating whether he was related to the attacker, who is still at large.

Thorsten Fleiss of the Düsseldorf police confirmed during a press conference that the attacker appeared to have aimed for the throats of his victims.

„The investigation and the search for possible other perpetrators and reasons for the crime are ongoing,” said in a police statement.

The attack took place late last night after an unknown assailant attacked several people with a knife, police said.

Fatal stabbings and shootings are relatively rare in Germany. Earlier this month, the government announced it wanted to tighten the rules on carrying a knife in public by reducing the maximum length allowed.

In June, a 29-year-old police officer died after being stabbed in Mannheim during an attack on a right-wing demonstration. A knife attack on a train in 2021 injured several people.

The city of Solingen, famous for knife manufacturing, has a population of around 165,000.
