Five civilians were killed and 12 others wounded in Ukrainian shelling of the town of Rakitnoe in Russia's border Belgorod region, the governor announced of the district Vyacheslav Gladkov, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

There are three children among the injured, Gladkov announced on the Telegram social network.

Reuters said it was unable to independently confirm the report. There is no comment on the issue from the Ukrainian side either.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny attacking civilians during the war, which Russia began with a full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbor on February 24, 2024.
