A Russian SU-24 plane was performing dangerous maneuvers on Thursday evening and was intercepted by the Polish Air Force, National Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamysz said on Friday, quoted by "Reuters".

He added that the order to intercept the plane was issued by the joint operational command of NATO's allied forces in Europe, and Polish planes located the plane, intercepted it and effectively stopped it. The minister did not give details about where the fighter jet was intercepted.

Last week, Estonia said Moscow briefly sent a fighter jet into NATO airspace over the Baltic Sea during an attempt by the Baltic country to stop a Russia-bound oil tanker believed to be part of a "shadow fleet" defying Western sanctions against Moscow.

NATO has stepped up security in the Baltic Sea after a series of incidents in which power cables, telecommunications links and gas pipelines were damaged following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
