Spain is hosting a meeting today dedicated to finding a solution to the war in the Gaza Strip, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
The meeting is attended by foreign ministers from 20 European and Arab countries. It is being held in Madrid. Representatives of international organizations are also participating in it.
Before the meeting began, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez said that the international community should consider sanctions on Israel to end the war in Gaza.
Following the recent expansion of Israeli military operations in Gaza, several countries that Israel considers allies have also joined the chorus of voices calling for international pressure to end the war in Gaza.
A two-month blockade of the enclave has worsened the situation with shortages of food, water, fuel, and medicine there. In the last few days, Israel has allowed humanitarian aid to enter, but according to international organizations, it is not enough.
"In the short term, to stop this war that has no purpose and to ensure that humanitarian aid enters the enclave en masse, without obstacles, in a neutral way, so that Israel is not the one who decides who can and cannot eat, I would say that the question of considering sanctions should be put on the table in Madrid," said the Spanish foreign minister.
"We must do everything, we must consider everything, to stop the war," he said. The call came after the EU decided earlier this week not to renegotiate its cooperation agreement with Israel.
A similar meeting in Madrid last year brought together countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as European countries such as Ireland and Norway, which have recognized the existence of a Palestinian state.
The meeting today will also be attended by representatives of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. It aims to encourage the search for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
