Disposable e-cigarettes are likely to be banned in Switzerland after the upper house of parliament - the Cantonal Council - voted in favor of the measure, the DPA agency reported, BTA reports.

After approval by lawmakers, the government will have to prepare and present the relevant draft law. The ban will not cover reusable e-cigarettes that can be recharged.

Popular among young people, the so-called "colorful vapes" often contain flavors such as jelly candies or cotton candy. During the plenary session, MEPs stressed that these products are not only addictive, but also pollute the environment with harmful substances. One MEP said teachers have reported seeing 12-year-old students waiting for break to use their e-cigarettes.

Disposable e-cigarettes have been available in Switzerland since 2020, with imports increasing by nearly 30% annually.

In Germany, they are still freely available, while the European Union is working on a regulation to ban them by the end of 2026. In the United Kingdom, the ban is already in force.
