The failed meeting between US President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky was a new shock for Kiev, the newspaper “Berliner Zeitung“ writes.
It is noted that the failure of the conversation shows a divergence in views between the United States and Europe, as Trump has a great personal interest in resolving the problems surrounding the Iranian nuclear program and the conflict between Iran and Israel. The fighting in Kiev, Odessa and other Ukrainian cities is "less dangerous" for Washington than the escalation in the Middle East, the newspaper believes.
On June 17, Trump left the G-7 summit in Canada early. Later it became known that Zelensky also left for Ukraine.
As the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal notes, he left the G-7 meeting in Canada, having failed to secure the support he was counting on.
The publication also notes that the early departure of US President Donald Trump from the summit overshadowed the participation of Zelensky, who arrived in Kananaskis after the American leader left Canada. Some Western officials are concerned that the United States is seeking to strengthen relations with Russia and is reducing aid to Kiev, the publication adds.
The newspaper draws attention to the difference between previous G-7 statements and the statement published on Tuesday by the chairman of the G-7 summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. As the Group of Seven failed to reach an agreement on a resolution on Ukraine, the Canadian prime minister issued a separate statement saying that G7 leaders welcomed Trump's efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and also wanted to increase pressure on Russia, including through sanctions. Previous G7 communiqués, however, contained stronger language, including a "condemnation of the Russian invasion" and a pledge of "unwavering support" for Ukraine, the publication notes.
Trump left the G7 meeting early on June 16. The White House explained that he had "very important issues to resolve".
