The European Union is unable to find effective solutions to the challenges related to migration. This was stated by György Bakondi, advisor to the Hungarian Prime Minister on internal security issues, in an interview with public television M1, quoted by the Hungarian news agency MTI, BTA reports.
According to him, a new decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union provides that EU institutions, and not individual member states, determine which countries are "safe enough" to accept expelled migrants. This, according to Bakondi, will complicate the process of returning illegal migrants and goes against the will of European citizens.
“This surprising measure in favor of migration will make expulsions more difficult, which is contrary to the interests of member states“, he said.
Bakondi pointed out that the decision is in the same spirit as the fines imposed on Hungary for refusing to allow migrants to apply for asylum while they are on the country's territory.
He also commented that the court decision aims to hinder the growing influence of political parties in Western Europe that oppose illegal migration – a trend that he believes is gaining increasing public support.
“Migration is gaining increasing political importance“, Bakondi noted.
While some EU countries are trying to curb illegal migration, decisions from Brussels are strengthening the powers of centralized institutions and weakening the role of national governments, he stressed.
In an interview with public radio, Bakondi reported that 8,300 illegal migrants have been arrested on Hungary's southern border since the beginning of the year - a significant increase compared to 3,000 in the same period last year. He linked this trend to the renewed activity of trafficking networks operating again on Serbian territory.
