In its current state, Serbia cannot become a member of the European Union. This was stated by the European Parliament rapporteur for the country, Tonino Picula, quoted by BGNES, reports News.bg.
According to him, none of the key European leaders have any illusions about Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the nature of his government.
According to Picula, Croatia must take a firmer political stance against the “manipulations of the Vucic regime“, which periodically detains Croatian citizens and expels them from the country.
For months now, mass protests have been taking place in Serbia against the president, provoked by the tragedy in Novi Sad, in which 16 people died.
The protesters accuse the Ministry of Interior of police violence. Claims categorically rejected by the Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic. He said that “the Interior Ministry and the police are not hiding anything about their actions“.
Alexander Vucic, who has been in power since 2017, has announced that he will not run in the next presidential election. His term expires in a little over a year.
