US President Donald Trump announced last night that he will award former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani the Presidential "Medal of Freedom", two days after his political ally was seriously injured in a car accident, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
In a statement on social media, Trump called Giuliani, who received recognition for his leadership after the September 11, 2001 attacks, but has sometimes caused controversy for his support for Trump, “the greatest mayor in the history of New York and an equally great American patriot“.
Giuliani is recovering after suffering a broken vertebra and other injuries in a car accident in New Hampshire, a spokesman for the former mayor said Sunday.
Giuliani was in a car driven by his spokesman, Ted Goodman, when their car was rear-ended by a car driven by a 19-year-old woman on Saturday night, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement.
Giuliani was disbarred from practicing law in New York and Washington after it was found that he repeatedly made false statements about Trump's loss in the 2020 election, the AP reported. He has been charged with crimes in Georgia and Arizona for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election, but he denies the charges.
