The Palestinian Foreign Ministry welcomed today the Belgian government's plans to recognize the Palestinian state, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost said early this morning that his country would do so during the annual session of the UN General Assembly later this month. However, he specified that this would happen when the last hostage held by "Hamas" is released from Gaza and the "Hamas" group is demilitarized.
„The principled position is fully consistent with international law, with UN resolutions and advocating for a two-state solution. "It demonstrates the vital support for achieving a lasting and just peace," the Palestinian Foreign Ministry wrote in the "Express." "The Ministry calls on all countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so urgently," the ministry added.
Recognition of statehood "will strengthen practical efforts to stop Israel's crime of genocide, forced displacement, famine and annexation, while at the same time providing a broad political horizon for resolving the conflict and ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine," it added.
