Romanian MEP and vice-chairman of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) Adrian Aksinia has asked President Nikusor Dan to start a procedure to call a referendum on the country's participation in a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Otherwise, AUR threatens to initiate collection of signatures needed to remove the head of state. This is clear from their position, BTA reported.

„Given the lack of legitimacy of the current political power and the obvious desire of Romanians not to participate in the conflict in Ukraine, the decision should be made only after consulting the people. I therefore formally ask the President of Romania to initiate the procedure for a consultative referendum, based on the prerogatives granted to him by Article 90 of the Constitution. The government's decision to participate in a military mission in Ukraine, even if it were for the purpose of maintaining peace, would be a serious violation of the will of the Romanian people and of Article 4, paragraph 1 of the Basic Law“, argues Adrian Aksinia.

The AUR also demands that President Nikusor Dan declassify all documents related to the military aid provided to Ukraine, and that all decisions, including those related to participation in European mechanisms such as the ReArm Europe initiative or the SAFE military equipment program, be previously validated in the Romanian Parliament after a thorough public debate.

On Thursday, the Romanian head of state said that he would not send soldiers to Ukraine, but would support peacekeeping operations when the conditions for peace are met.

“Many of the countries that are close to Russia are making the same decision as us - not to send people to Ukraine after a possible peace or a possible ceasefire. Instead, we will support Ukraine logistically, with our bases, peacekeeping operations“, the head of state explained on the air of Antena1 television.

He also emphasized the importance of the United States in managing the conflict.

“I would like the United States to be involved, including in terms of sanctions, because the sanctions that they can impose on Russia can be very consistent and very restrictive. We are in such a moment now“, Nikusor Dan also commented.
