To save electric cars, VW changes their names - 1

The German giant is preparing a large-scale reshuffle in the names of its battery models, with the first major "victim" of this new strategy being the popular ID.4 crossover. It is expected that by the end of this year the model will be transformed and officially renamed ID.Tiguan - a move with which Wolfsburg hopes to return emotion and recognition among its conservative fans.

The reason for this turn is simple: abstract combinations such as ID.3 or ID.4 have never managed to take root in the minds of the mass buyer in the way that legends such as Golf or Polo did. The brand's management admits that the Tiguan name carries with it decades of trust, quality and a clear hierarchy that its "digital" brothers lack. Thus, the new version of the electric SUV will not be just a light facelift, but a complete repositioning, bringing it as close as possible to its “fuel“ prototype.

However, the change will not be just cosmetic. The future ID.Tiguan will benefit from the updated MEB+ architecture, which promises greater mileage and higher efficiency. The sweetest news for critics of the current interior is the return of physical buttons – Volkswagen is officially giving up the annoying sensor sliders that have infuriated drivers for the past five years. The design is expected to become sharper and “muscular“ to match the new name, and production at the German plant in Emden will continue until at least 2031.

This wave of renaming is just the beginning. It has already been confirmed that the compact ID.2, which should make electric mobility accessible to the masses, will debut on the market like ID.Polo. It seems that Volkswagen is stopping treating its electric vehicles as a separate, futuristic experiment and is integrating them fully into its classic family. In a world where even Mercedes-Benz is starting to give up the EQ brand, Wolfsburg is relying on its most powerful weapon - nostalgia and proven names.
