What should be done if a new Chinese car starts to rust? - 1

With the entry of many new Chinese brands into the Bulgarian market, the topic of the longevity of their bodies has become particularly relevant. Although their design is impressive, the specifics of anti-corrosion treatment for some manufacturers require increased attention from owners, especially in the context of native conditions - humid climate, sea air on the Black Sea coast and aggressive chemicals on the roads in winter.

Vulnerable areas under the shiny shell

Many new models from the East hide specific design features, such as unsealed hidden cavities and overlapping panels, which often remain without a protective coating at the factory. The sills, fender arches and lower edges of the doors are most at risk. A thinner layer of primer and paint is often observed, which makes the metal defenseless when hit by small pebbles. In the absence of complete galvanization, any small scratch can quickly “bloom“ into a rust stain.

Extremely dangerous is the so-called “internal corrosion“, which develops under the decorative plastic elements and fender flares. Mud and moisture are retained there, creating a kind of greenhouse effect, corroding the metal away from the driver's sight.

How to stop the process in time?

If you notice the first bubbles on the paint, the reaction must be immediate. The affected area is cleaned to a shine, then it is necessarily treated with a rust converter (preferably phosphorus-based). For professional repairs, the use of epoxy primers is mandatory - they create an airtight layer that isolates the metal. Ordinary acrylic spray putty is porous and lets microscopic water molecules through, which makes the repair short-lived.

But before we get there, preventive protection is the best investment for new Chinese cars. It includes:

Vacuum treatment: Injecting paraffin or oil compounds into the beams, sills and columns. These preparations literally push out moisture.

Chassis protection: Applying elastic polymer coatings that, in addition to corrosion, also protect against mechanical shocks, while improving noise insulation.

Important rule: Before treatment, the car must be washed and dried perfectly. Applying a preparation to a wet surface only seals in moisture and accelerates decay.

Golden rules for operation

Maintaining high “hygiene“ on the chassis in winter is critical. Regular washing of the fenders and underbody removes salts before they can begin their destructive work. At least once a season, check the car for new "scars" from pebbles and "seal" them with a corrector.

Installing quality mud flaps and additional fenders is also a sensible step that reduces the "sandblasting" effect on the sills. Don't forget to check the drainage holes too - if they are clogged, your doors literally turn into aquariums. A little care today can save you thousands of leva in tinsmithing services in just a few years.
