Fico and Merz expect review of EU ban on internal combustion engine cars - 1

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expect the EU leadership to review the ban on the production and sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines in the community from 2035.

„Together with the German Chancellor, we noted that the result of the growing pressure on EU decision-makers will most likely be a certain review of this ban, for example in the form of allowing the continued production of hybrid vehicles“, Fico wrote on Facebook after meeting with Merz.

Fico also announced that Merz would soon visit Slovakia. The dates of the visit are being agreed.

The phasing out of vehicles with internal combustion engines was approved by the Council of the EU in 2023. The decision stipulates that from 2035, EU countries will no longer register new cars with such engines. This measure was adopted as part of the EU's climate policy.
