Europe is using up gas from underground reserves faster than planned - 1

Underground gas storage reserves in France, one of the leaders in Europe in terms of storage capacity, have fallen to 39.8%, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).

Other countries with leading gas storage capacity are also actively using their stored fuel. The storage facilities in Germany are 40.5% full, in Austria - 52.3%, in Italy - 63.3%, and in the Netherlands - 34.1%.

Storage facilities in Slovakia are 48.6% full, in Hungary - 49.2%, in the Czech Republic - 55.2%, in Romania - 58.2%, in Bulgaria - 60.4%, in Belgium - 39.1%, in Denmark - 40.9%, in Latvia - 36%, and in Croatia - 26.4%.

The last season of gas extraction from European underground storage facilities ended on March 28, 2025, with 33.57% of reserves remaining. Underground gas storage facilities in Europe are currently 48.36% full (14.77 percentage points lower than the average for this date over the past 5 years), compared to 59.3% a year earlier.

Since the start of the heating season on 13 October, EU countries have withdrawn approximately 43 billion cubic metres of gas from storage facilities. Net production (total production flow exceeding injection volume) exceeded 38 billion cubic metres. In addition, total gas production from underground gas storage facilities on the 100th day after reaching their maximum capacity was 5% lower than the average for this day over the previous five years.

The total fuel volume in underground gas storage facilities is currently only 53.4 billion cubic metres.
