Deputies of the Senate (upper house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan approved a law providing for the ratification of an agreement on international combined freight transport between members of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).
The agreement, signed in Samarkand in November 2022, is aimed at further development of the transit and transport potential and trade and economic relations between the OTD countries. Earlier, the Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, Marat Karabayev, noted that at the end of 2023, the volume of freight transport between Kazakhstan and OTD member states amounted to about 40 million tons, which is 15% more than the figure for 2022. According to him, the agreement creates prerequisites for a further increase in the volume of transit freight through Kazakhstan, which will have a positive impact on the development of the country's transport and transit potential.“
As part of the agreement, the volume of freight transport carried out by rail, water and road between the OTD countries will be increased. The Parties shall cooperate and provide mutual assistance to promote the combined transport of goods. For this purpose, a commission consisting of representatives of interested state bodies and organizations is formed.
After approval by the Senate, the law will be signed by the President of Kazakhstan.
The Organization of Turkic States was established at the initiative of Kazakhstan in 2009. The Secretariat of the OTC is located in Istanbul. The organization currently includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
