The conflict between leading American IT companies and the European Union (EU) is escalating over the community's policy to strictly regulate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This opinion was expressed by ag. Bloomberg.
Apple has refused to release new software based on Apple Intelligence AI in the EU, and Meta Corporation has taken a similar decision regarding an updated version of its open AI model Llama. The reason for such steps on the part of the companies was the strict technological regulation and antimonopoly control in the EU, as well as the legislative norms in the field of personal data protection. The companies' policies show an “escalation of the long-standing conflict between Silicon Valley and the EU”, according to agency observers.
At the same time, American corporations themselves claim that EU policies threaten to stop the development of AI technologies. The EU believes that giving development companies too much leeway could “exacerbate the damage that Silicon Valley's dominance of the global technology industry is already causing”.
In March, members of the European Parliament approved a law on the use of AI technologies. 523 MPs voted in favor of the document, which is the world's first law on this topic, and another 46 MPs voted against it. It aims to help regulate the use of technologies such as the ChatGPT chatbot and real-time biometric identification systems.
