Nearly 17% of all pensioners in Bulgaria continue to work even after they have already reached the age of retirement and receive one. In reality, people of retirement age also turn out to be a significant share of the labor force in the country - 12% of all workers. The demographic crisis is also among the main factors for the high percentage of working pensioners. And yet the main reason why pensioners in our country continue to work is low incomes and high inflation, which for the last few years has exceeded 30%.
“It is good for pensioners that they can bring in additional income, but on the other hand it is not good for the rest of society, since there are not enough good salaries offered for someone to apply for these positions“, says Atanas Katsarchev, chief economist of the KT “Podkrepa“ and adds: “The working poor have increased for another year and are now over 10%, approaching 11% of the working population, which is indicative of the state of the economy, of the state of the labor market“.
