The European Commission (EC) has failed to confirm that it will not impose 100% tariffs on goods from India as a measure to put pressure on Russia.
„You are asking me to confirm something we have never confirmed,“ EC spokesman Olof Gill told a briefing when asked to confirm that Brussels had no intention of imposing tariffs on Indian goods. He also said he did not intend to comment on media reports.
On September 9, the Financial Timesreported that US President Donald Trump had called on the EU to increase tariffs on China and India to 100% to increase pressure on Russia. The publication previously reported that the EU is considering imposing sanctions on China and third countries for buying Russian oil and gas. On September 10, Reuters reported that the likelihood of the EU imposing 100% tariffs on Indian and Chinese exports is low.
