Today, eight weeks before Easter, the Orthodox Church celebrates Lent. On this day, believers eat meat for the last time before the great Christian holiday of the Resurrection of Christ.
In addition to Lent, the holiday is also called Judgment Day, writes the Bulgarian National Radio.
During the service in the temples, the Gospel text is read, dedicated to the parable of the Savior at the Second Coming. The Church recalls that a day will come when responsibility will be sought for the deeds committed on Earth. Therefore, it calls on believers to preserve repentance, humility and love in their hearts.
Taking into account human spiritual weakness, the Church gradually introduces Christians to the beginning of Lent, which this year begins on February 23. During the week leading up to Lent, believers can eat dairy products, but must abstain from meat.
Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil will celebrate the Mass for Shrove Sunday at the church of "St. Great Martyr George the Victorious" in Dupnitsa.
