"The bankruptcy of the state has been postponed again!". This is what former finance minister Asen Vassilev wrote on his Facebook profile, quoted by novini.bg.
"Data from Eurostat (the statistical office of the European Union) show:
1. Bulgaria's deficit for 2023 is - 1.9% of GDP (gross domestic product). The average deficit of EU countries is – 3.5%.
2. Debt to GDP at the end of 2023 is - 23.1% - the second lowest of the EU countries after Estonia. The average debt to GDP for Eurozone countries is 88.6%.
3. According to seasonally adjusted data, the budget balance for the fourth quarter was +3.6%, which means the largest surplus since 2004
