„The End of Danaia's life began to change. We are already seeing the results. In a few days, we got the NHIF to change the regulations on expensive drugs. We managed to get people talking. We managed to show the need for a national children's hospital, said Ani Stoyanova, Danaya's mother, in the bTV studio.
„I know very well that there is no one to return my child. I want other children not to be in Danaya's place and other parents not to be in my place. It won't happen without public pressure. This is not my fight, this is our fight“, she pointed out.
„If I have to make a personal assessment of this one year, I would say that the phrase “time heals“ is not true. On the contrary. You sharpen your senses. The shortage is getting bigger every day. It's like you sent your child on an excursion and the more time passes, the more difficult it becomes, Stoyanova added.
„Waiting for a national children's hospital cost us a lot. We cannot pay the price of lost children's lives. We are talking about saving lives. I am far from thinking that I don't know what kind of world I live in, that people die. This is inevitable, but when it comes to saving lives – we are late“, she stressed.
Danaya Foundation submitted to the Council of Ministers, the National Assembly and the Ministry of Health 11,705 signatures for reforms in children's health care with specific proposals to make the changes happen. Citizens from 44 cities and dozens of villages joined the initiative.
„On May 9, when it was one year since Danaya's death, we submitted the proposals. The two most important points of the citizens' initiative are the standards. These are rules of good medical practice and standards. They are that thing that is written in blood, like the Road Traffic Act. These are different situations established over the years. These are protocols that every specialist must work on, Stoyanova added.
„In Danaya's case, on April 27th, when she went after the blow to the head, if there was such a protocol, the specialist who examined her would simply open it and see that in a child with a blow to the head and accompanying hematological disease, he should at least hospitalize her and do a scan.
We are the only ones who do not have such protocols. The Bulgarian medical union, in violation of the law, refuses to do them because doctors become vulnerable. If something is not done according to the protocol, you are responsible. If there is no protocol, then everything is at personal discretion“, Danaya's mother pointed out.
„A personal claim has not yet been entered. Coming up. The prosecutor's office is working on the case. The investigation into Danaya's death has not been closed. I have to testify soon. I don't meet any resistance, I just don't trust them. The system is very cumbersome. It's been a long time. They failed to find violations that were described in some audit reports of the Ministry of Health. These violations have been recorded in official documents, said Ani Stoyanova.
„The only resignation I demand is of the director of „Pirogov” Valentin Dimitrov. Prof. Hristo Hinkov is no longer the Minister of Health. Acting Minister Galya Kondeva canceled the order for the dismissal of the director of “Pirogov”, issued by Hinkov, without having familiarized herself with the circumstances. She did it on her second day. Galya Kondeva does not have the physical opportunity to get acquainted with all the violations in the process of Danaya's treatment. To make such a decision is frivolous“, she emphasized.
Private Children's Hospital
„It's funny. Especially now, when Dimitar Glavchev has filed a report with the DANS and the prosecutor's office. How much DANS and the prosecutor's office understand from a children's hospital. I don't know if Glavchev was deceived. "People who don't understand child health are dealing with the reforms and making mistakes," commented Dania's mother.
„There is nothing wrong with setting up a private children's hospital. This case is different. Its creation will bleed the system, because we have a huge personnel deficit. 17 thousand sisters are missing. I don't know how many pediatricians. The establishment of a private hospital will attract all these personnel, and the Constitution says that children have the right to free health treatment and care. By creating this hospital, the constitutional rights of our children have been violated, she added.
