On August 12, 1879 it was created The Bulgarian Navy. Although it was created on this date, the Bulgarian navy celebrated its first holiday much later - in 1914, on November 21 - the date on which the torpedo boat unit defeated the Turkish cruiser “Hamidie” in 1912
It all started 145 years ago. Then the Bulgarian Navy was created under the name “Danube Flotilla and Marine Division” in the city of Ruse. For the first time, the Bulgarian naval flag flew over 4 steamers, 7 steam cutters, one schooner, one barge and five rowing boats.
In the following year, 1915, the navy organized the holiday outside its framework with the participation of the Varna public, but the date was already August 2 - the ascension of King Ferdinand to the throne.
In the following years, along with November 21, Nicholas Day was also celebrated as a maritime holiday, after 1944 and until 1956, only the Day of the Soviet Navy - July 31 - was celebrated. Only in 1956, with a decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly No. 273 and an order of the Minister of Defense No. 33 (both documents dated August 9) for a holiday of the Bulgarian Navy, the date of its creation was determined - August 12, with the clarification that it should be celebrated the second Sunday of the month.
