The General Assembly of the Supreme Court and Supreme Court elected a constitutional judge from the magistrate quota. Galina Toneva from the Criminal Board of the Supreme Court received 94 votes “for” in the runoff against Svetlana Kalinova from the Civic College.
180 magistrates participated in the vote.
There were three candidates - Toneva, Kalinova and Evgeny Staykov from the Chamber of Commerce. On the first ballot, the two received 79 and 59 of the votes, respectively.

From 1985 to 1986, he was a trainee judge at the Sofia City Court, and in the period 1986 – In 1990, he was a legal consultant in the SP "Territorial supply" – the city of Sofia. From 1990 to 1992, he was a deputy district prosecutor in the Fifth RP – Sofia, and from 1992 to 1995 he was a district judge in the Fifth District Court – Sofia.
From 1995 to 1998, he was a judge in the Sofia City Court. In the period 1998 – 2007 he was a judge in the Sofia Court of Appeal, from 2007 to 2008 he was acting deputy president of the court, and in the period 2008 – In 2009, he was the deputy chairman of the Sofia Court of Appeal.
From 2009 to 2013, he was the deputy of the chief prosecutor at the VKP, in 2013 he was a prosecutor at the VKP, head of the "Coordination of institutional cooperation and training" sector, then until 2015 he was a prosecutor in the department “Analytical“.
In the period 2013 – In 2015, he was seconded as a permanent lecturer at the National Institute of Justice.
Since 2015, he has been a judge in the Supreme Court of Cassation, and since December 6, 2018, he has been the chairman of the Second Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Cassation. He is a member of the Program Board of the National Institute of Justice in the period 2012 – 2013 and from 2019 to the present moment, as he is also a lecturer at the National Academy of Sciences.
He is also a member of the Analytical Unit of VKS.
