The fire on the Bulgarian-Greek border in Slavyanka flared up again. Today is the 21st day of fighting the fire in Slavyanka. On two fronts, firefighters, forest officials and the military were trying to control the fire in the mountain. The efforts of over 120 forest officials, firefighters and soldiers on the Bulgarian side were supported by an airplane, and in Greece a helicopter extinguished the fire. It turns out to be insufficient to deal with the raging element.
A 10-minute torrential rain fell on the scene, which proved insufficient to extinguish the fire. He seemingly calmed the outbreaks, but surely – only temporarily, because high temperatures are expected to rekindle the outbreaks tomorrow, aided by the wind, which also raised the fire several times today, causing major problems for firefighters, forest officials and the military.
The eastern front of the fire appears to be pretty well secured now, as very serious amounts of water were dumped on it today. However, the Western one still continues to worry everyone, because there needs to be more activity from the Greek side as well. An activity that was promised today by Greece. Our southern neighbors have stated that they will increase their activity in air extinguishing.
„The situation is really dynamic. We work on both fronts all day. Over 40 tons of water poured down the eastern front. He is calm at the moment. On the western front, now with the blown wind after 4-4:30 p.m., it can be seen that it started to smoke a little. There is some activity. There are staff there watching him. The wind is blowing up the ridge and cannot spread the fire in our direction. These foci here, which are burning more actively, are inside the burned part and do not create a danger of strong spread at the time of the fire,” said engineer Petko Angelov from the Southwest State Enterprise before the afternoon rain.
