Dimitar Ganev: The political crisis will deepen - 1

The political crisis will deepen, I will not be surprised if we have voter turnout less than 2 million. Sociologist Dimitar Ganev told BNT, quoted by FOCUS.

"The depth of the political crisis in Bulgaria is absolutely unprecedented. Seven parliamentary elections in three and a half years. There is no political party that can withstand this pressure, I mean pressure from the point of view of election mobilization, expenditure of financial resources, of organizational resources, continuous change of the political situation. There is no party that can withstand this pressure without suffering some damage. And here on the field there are no unaffected. Only after the last elections, we see a split in two of the formations - in DPS and a change of leadership, garnished with disputes, legally including in BSP.

When I say that there are no untouchables on the field, I mean that there is no party that increases its score only in these seven elections, on the contrary - they only decrease it. Another worrisome trend is that there has been a virtually non-stop decline in voter turnout, reaching an all-time high of 2.2 million votes. In the October elections, we can expect nothing less than a deepening of this same trend - to the extent that it would not surprise me to have a turnout of less than 2 million. Imagine now - a turnout of 2 million, that means that in parliament they will formations for which about 1.8 people voted, because there will still be a share of votes cast for parties that do not pass the 4 percent barrier and do not enter the parliament," said Dimitar Ganev.

The sociologist confirmed that such turnout would mean an absolutely illegitimate parliament.

"This first. And secondly, if we enter the hypothesis that a regular cabinet is formed after the elections on October 27, it will stand at about half or a little more than half, which means that the regular power will stand at less than 1 million votes. There will be a series of parties, the sum of the votes cast for them will be below 1 million. Mathematically we can list many options, but the political options are limited - I think this could be a build that looks almost exactly like the build we had 10 years ago. In 2014, at the parliamentary elections, a cabinet was formed between GERB and the Reform Bloc with a coalition agreement and a support agreement with the third and fourth - then the Patriotic Front and ABV. What, in my opinion, is the only possible thing to do is a coalition agreement or some form of cooperation between GERB and PP-DB with an agreement for support from a third party, and a fourth one may be necessary," he added to public television.
