With the declaration of Independence, Bulgaria returns to the political map of Europe as an independent state - this is what the director of the Regional History Museum in Veliko Tarnovo Ivan Tsrov said in an interview with Radio Varna. He recalled that the Treaty of Berlin made the Bulgarian Principality a vassal of the Ottoman Empire. Independence is the result of numerous diplomatic shuttles and vicissitudes, he reminded.
According to the historian, Bulgaria has always wanted to be part of the big politics, but has always remained on its periphery. The same thing happened with the declaration of Independence. "The eyes of the great powers were directed at Austria-Hungary, which was about to annex the Turkish provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ferdinand used this to announce the end of the vassalage of the Bulgarian state,", comments Ivan Tsarov.
