Ivan Krastev: The thought of a government with a legitimate majority begins to look like a miracle - 1

„If five years ago someone had told us that in three years we will participate in elections six times, four times we will not elect a government at all, and twice it will not last more than a year – that would have looked like an absurdity”, political scientist Ivan Krastev commented to bTV.

„Now the idea that there can be a government with a legitimate majority begins to look like a miracle. This seems particularly dangerous to me – that you get used to everything that happens”, he also said.

In his words, what we observe in Bulgaria is beginning to be observed in other countries in the EU, and he gave the example of France.

„A society is emerging in which 70% of people look at their own politics as spectators”, commented the political scientist.

„The problem with fragmentation is that there is a great fragmentation of the political space – 6-7 parties. They have usually promised their constituents not what they will do, but what they will not do. Suddenly, it is expected that for others, voting begins to lose its meaning”, Ivan Krastev also said.

Ivan Krastev is a political scientist, founder and chairman of the Center for Liberal Strategies, as well as a researcher at the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in Vienna. His books have been translated into over 20 languages, and his commentary and analysis have been published by publications such as the "Financial Times" and "The New York Times".
