Lyubomir Kyuchukov: I do not see a connection between our full acceptance into Schengen and the situation in Syria - 1

First of all, our acceptance into the Schengen area is a success. It was clear that recently the geopolitical situation favors the membership of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen, because in this way the EU tries to eliminate all internal contradictions in the union. This was stated in an interview with NovaNews by the international analyst and former Deputy Foreign Minister Lyubomir Kyuchukov, quoted by novini.bg.

He does not think that there is any connection between our full acceptance in Schengen and the situation in Syria. He pointed out that it is possible to expect a wave of refugees from there, but explained that this largely depends on the processes that are about to develop in the Middle Eastern country, in which, according to him, many regional interests are at play.
When asked whether the migrant pressure on Bulgaria will now increase, Kyuchukov explained that Bulgaria, being an external border of the EU, will be able to benefit from the provisions laid down in the so-called Migrant Pact, and will be able to redistribute part of the migrants in the other member states of the Community. In the event that a country refuses to accept migrants, it will have to pay 20,000 euros for each individual refugee it has refused to shelter on its territory.

The former diplomat also refuted one of the rumors in the public space that the Schengen borders are closing.

Schengen borders are not closed, selective checks are introduced at individual borders, and this can be done within six months. Similar measures are within the prerogatives of each member state, Kyuchukov explained.

Regarding the second term of Donald Trump at the head of the USA, Kyuchukov believes that he will be much more revengeful, but at the same time that all countries will try to maintain good contacts with him and his administration.

On the war in Ukraine, Lubomir Kyuchukov commented that it is important for Kyiv in 2025. to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict, because the longer this war drags on, the more Ukraine will suffer losses – both human and territorial.
