Acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev will take part in the European Council meeting in Brussels, the government press service reported, quoted by BTA.

The meeting of the leaders of the member states will be chaired for the first time by the new President of the European Council António Costa, and will also be attended by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

The situation in Ukraine will be a central topic in the discussions of the heads of state and government. During the European Council meeting, Dimitar Glavchev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to sign a Security Cooperation Agreement. The draft of the Agreement was sent to the National Assembly at the beginning of this week, the government's press center added.

The remaining issues that the leaders will discuss in the Belgian capital are the situation in the Middle East, migration, enlargement of the Union, crisis prevention and management, and EU-US relations.

The European Council meeting was preceded by the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will take place today. Bulgaria welcomes the regular holding of meetings in this format, which are a continuation of the 2018 Sofia Summit, the Council of Ministers informed. Our country supports the European perspective of all six Western Balkan countries, as well as the parallel mutually beneficial deepening of sectoral cooperation with the region. The principle of own merits remains the strongest guarantee that the enlargement policy will maintain its transformative power in the interest of citizens, the official cabinet added. Bulgaria places particular emphasis on good neighbourliness among the criteria for EU accession. Equally important is the effective guarantee of the rights of persons belonging to minorities and communities, the statement added.
