The leader of the MRF-NN Delyan Peevski proposed a parliamentary investigation into the activities of George Soros in Bulgaria, but according to the executive director of "Open Society" Georgi Stoychev, such an initiative is completely unfounded.
In an interview with the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), Stoychev said that this would be "a pure waste of parliamentary time", defining the topic as "absolutely fabricated".
"Mr. Soros is a person who helped Bulgaria in the most difficult times – in the mid-1990s. Back then, he financed social soup kitchens, provided scholarships and even helped with the first internet connection in the country," Stoychev pointed out.
He pointed out that Soros has donated over $100 million to various initiatives in Bulgaria, including educational programs and cultural projects.
"Those who have influence on politics are the politicians themselves. Mr. Soros is simply a philanthropist and a person who fights against authoritarian tendencies. That is why he has earned many enemies," the executive director of "Open Society" also commented.
According to him, the attacks on civil society organizations in our country are part of a broader anti-democratic propaganda aimed at stigmatizing the non-governmental sector.
"They are looking for a scapegoat in him," Stoychev concluded.
