Valchev: Soon there will be no mandatory matriculation exam in mathematics - 1

“We want to carry out a comprehensive educational reform, it will take time, it will require discussion. The hours in mathematics and natural sciences must be increased. That is where the greatest shortage of hours is, there the most in-depth learning must be done. There, to the greatest extent, if the student misses something, the deficit is fatal and he cannot compensate and leads to demotivation“, said Minister of Education Krasimir Valchev to bTV.

He also answered one of the most worrying questions of parents and children – will there be a mandatory matriculation exam in mathematics?

„We need to take a set of measures in the direction of natural sciences and mathematics, the last one is a mandatory matriculation exam in mathematics, soon there will be none“, said Valchev.

But he was categorical that the curricula and the curriculum must change.

„The first changes can be expected from the next school year and will be related to an increase in classes. Narrow specialization will not be so important in the future, basic knowledge is needed. And the programs are quite ambitious in school and children and teachers do not manage to study them in depth. "It is not necessary for students to graduate from secondary school after 12 years of school," believes Valchev.

The Minister of Education announced that students lose 10 days a year, but it can be done so that two weeks less effective school time is lost per year. According to Krasimir Valchev, the main reason for the shortage of time is that the education system is increasingly overloaded with subjects and more and more classes, and we want children to know many foreign languages.

Valchev added that foreign languages are more like classes in high school than Bulgarian language, literature, mathematics and natural sciences combined.

He said that he would propose to the members of parliament that there be a general ban on the use of phones in school.
