A teacher from Stara Zagora continues to teach at 90 years old.
Vera Mihaylova still remembers her first students today, but she also regrets that the passion and ambition in education from the middle of the last century is almost absent today, bTV reports.
At 90, Vera Mihaylova continues to teach with the same fervor as she did at 20. “I'm getting tired of teaching, but I'm glad”, she shares.
The first time she entered the classroom as a teacher was in the distant 1953. He teaches children from 27 neighborhoods at the school in the village of Farevtsi in Tryavna.
To this day, he remembers Vitan, the student from the farthest neighborhood, who walked six kilometers from home to school every day. “He always came to school with a bag full of textbooks and notebooks. He made a strong impression on me and I said: “Vitan, why are you carrying so many things in your bag?“ And he tells me that his father will plow until noon, and then he will bring the cattle - so that he can continue to graze them. And while he grazes them, he will study his lessons and do his homework there. That's why she brings the books for today and for tomorrow“, says Vera.
Before she started training teachers at the Institute for Advanced Study in Stara Zagora, Vera Mihaylova taught in Tryavna, Ivaylovgrad, Targovishte and Ruse - there she also taught prisoners. She remembers how one of them escaped through the window from her class because of a girl.
The times were difficult and poor, but there was passion and hope, Vera Mihaylova recalls today. “At that time, there was a lot of ambition, a lot of willingness to achieve everything that needed to be achieved“, the 90-year-old teacher also said.
