Membership in the eurozone is not an end in itself, it is a means. We want Bulgaria to be a rich country, developed, modern and for Bulgarian citizens to have prospects for development and that is the direction. By joining the eurozone, we aim for this to happen even faster - this is what Christian Vigenin, MEP from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats/BSP Group, commented in the studio of "The Day Begins".
According to him, this is not the idea of standing outside until we become rich and then entering the eurozone.
"We believe that by entering the eurozone, this will increase our opportunities to work for Bulgaria to be rich. The eurozone is a tool, not an ultimate goal of our centuries-old development as a country. It is a means for Bulgarian citizens to live better," explained Vigenin.
In his words, this was also the goal of our membership in the EU, and it brings with it membership in the eurozone at a time when the country is ready.
"Bulgaria's membership in the EU has brought far more benefits than the harms that some are trying to bring to the forefront. This is a matter of work and effort. Just as expectations were created then that something positive would suddenly happen for Bulgaria, now in the same way a tension is created that the world will almost collapse on us from January 1, 2026," he added.
Vigenin also said that he respectfully accepts the skepticism of many people. It has some grounds, but at the same time these people should not be blamed. On the contrary, since there are such fears, they must be addressed adequately, he added.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party has never declared itself against the euro. On the contrary, all our documents state that we support Bulgaria's membership in the eurozone and that politics must be in preparation for membership in the eurozone, said Christian Vigenin.
