Bozhidar Bozhanov: PP and DB remain divided over the vote of no confidence - 1

PP and DB remain divided over when to hold a vote of no confidence so that it does not affect Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone. This became clear from the words of Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-chairman of "Yes, Bulgaria", one of the leaders in "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria", who is a guest on the show "Panorama".

"We Continue the Change" stated that after July 9 (i.e. after the vote of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council on our membership in the eurozone) the risk of Bulgaria entering the eurozone will be zero and therefore PP will be able to initiate a vote of no confidence. According to Bozanov, however, a vote of no confidence at the wrong time would be destructive.

"We have different opinions, different tactical approaches with colleagues from "Continuing Change". And this is no secret, it is not something new, it is not something that is happening for the first time. We are talking about it especially in the last parliament, but far from only. Colleagues believe that the government has too many sins and this cannot be waited for. Our opinion is that any even correct thesis, if expressed and objectified, for example, a vote of no confidence at the wrong time, would rather be negative, destructive. That is why our opinion is that the earliest moment would be after the summer, and this, of course, will also be discussed in the parliamentary group, which is ultimately the body that should make this decision. And it will most likely be discussed in July. Our opinion is different on the tactical approach, on the question of when."

Bozhanov is categorical that the government is not working because it is too dependent on Delyan Peevski.

"We share the opinion that this government is too dependent on Peevski, that it is not working. Even we cannot index so many scandals, because it simply does not work. Except, of course, on the topic of the eurozone, for which we did not participate in the previous votes of no confidence, since our support for the eurozone is unconditional. So our difference is in the tactical approach, in this case, in the communication presentation of our theses, and not so much in what we think about the actions of one or another government."

The co-chairman of "Yes, Bulgaria" commented that the attacks against Borisov are due to "long-term irresponsible decisions".

"The fire against Borisov is not fire against him personally, but against his often long-term irresponsible decisions, such as, for example, sticking so strongly to Peevski. Because at the beginning of this parliament, such a choice was practically available. The possibility for the government not to be so shaky, depending on the first implicit, then very explicit support of Peevski, was there. And we were at the negotiating table, despite the criticism against us that after the assembly we had not learned our lesson. The lesson that we have always known is that we must approach the country responsibly. But Borisov then acted irresponsibly, chose Peevski and is now in such a bind with him that there is no way this rapprochement that you are talking about can happen."

Bozhanov is of the opinion that many governments have merit for Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone.

"I personally believe that all governments from 1997 to now, including the one in office at the time, have merit for this path - from joining the European Union to the eventual adoption of the euro, which I hope will happen from 2026. The convergence reports say that - yes, we have covered the formal criteria. We have covered the deficit, inflation, we are convergent. But the rule of law, the fight against corruption, the resilience of institutions to external influence, their consistency, sustainability are a serious problem facing the Bulgarian economy. And not only the economy."
