Today, June 12, our famous mountaineer Doychin Vassilev, also known as an Antarctic researcher and documentary filmmaker, celebrates his 80th birthday.
He was born in the village of Kumaritsa, today a district of Novi Iskar, Sofia municipality. He climbed three Himalayan eight-thousanders: Dhaulagiri (1995), Everest (1997) and Makalu (1998). His reported ascent of Cho Oyu on 17 May 1999 remains unacknowledged by an independent source. In 1999, during an attempt to climb Shisha Pangma, Doychin Vasilev and Karina Salova reached the so-called Central/West Peak (8008m), about two hours from the highest point, Main Peak (8013m).
Doychin Vassilev participated in three national expeditions in the Himalayas - Lhotse, 1981, Everest, 1984 and Annapurna, 1989.
