President Rumen Radev, the head of state Rumen Radev, the supreme commander Rumen Radev requested a referendum on the euro. The request was rejected by the Speaker of Parliament Natalia Kiselova (BSP), but is this the end of the matter!? Many constitutionalists believe that with this action President Radev violated the basic law, and this gives full grounds to request impeachment. And this is again according to our basic law.

Impeachment - test or sacrifice
With the possible removal of Rumen Radev from office, he becomes a victim of the “system“. Thus, he “falls from office“, but this will give him the strength to "stepped" into the political arena with a party. Whether it will be anti-European and pro-Russian... we'll see.

The fact is that President Radev quite consciously violated the Constitution of Bulgaria with his proposal for a referendum on the euro. He knows very well that his actions are unconstitutional. The very fact that his legal secretary Krum Zarkov resigned on this basis, because he does not agree with this action of Radev, is eloquent. Zarkov resigned, and the president accepted it. Just differences of opinion... No, there is certainly something else.

We will recall that during the consultations on forming a government in the 48th parliament, when Radev accepted the parliamentary group of "Vazrazhdane" on November 9, 2022, the head of state categorically refused to call a referendum on the euro, but he also argued very well for this.

Just two months ago, on March 13, at a meeting with students at Plovdiv University, Radev clearly stated that he could not violate the Constitution by signing a decree for a referendum, and that by signing the EU accession treaty we had undertaken to introduce the euro.

On May 9, 2025, the head of state did exactly the opposite – used his right to address the nation and called for a referendum. What changed in Rumen Radev's view? Only he knows, but a 180-degree turn is not made by chance.
If we are to be realistic, we can only abandon the euro if we leave the EU.
The President knows very well what decisions the Constitutional Court has on the subject, but despite this, he clearly quite consciously violated the Constitution by proposing a referendum, but to postpone it for at least 1 year, not until 20 years, as they want from “Vazrazhdane“.

BSP Will any party ask for impeachment? That is the question. Are there grounds for impeachment - there are. Many lawyers agree on this. In order for an impeachment to pass in parliament, 160 votes are needed in parliament.

What do the calculations show? GERB-SDS, PP-DB, “DPS-New Beginning“, BSP - United Left and “DPS-DPS“ make up 169 votes (these are also the parties that firmly want the eurozone to happen to us). “Vazrazhdane“, “Velicie“ and MECH, as well as the coalition partner in the government - ITN, are categorically for the referendum (71 votes), but they are irrelevant if the BSP decides to remove Radev. The BSP nominated him, the BSP may also remove him. The Socialists were the last to come out with a declaration that Bulgaria's path is in the EU, including the eurozone.
