The transport problem (it hasn't become chaos yet) in Sofia clearly shows what it's like to be a union, a unionist, in general some kind of "stubborn" person, as well as what it's like to be one "button" away from becoming active.
What turns out
Salaries in the transport sector in the capital are around and above 3,000 leva, in the metro the average is 4,600 leva. But we want more and more, after all, Sofia's budget is like a "cash cow". Working conditions, supplements, bonuses, vouchers, etc. Yes, there are probably people who get around 2,500 leva, but is that a small amount of money?
In reality, the level of salaries in public transport is such that they are like those of people with top education and management positions in the private sector! Low-level positions in the IT sector start at 3,000 leva, and management positions exceed 5,000 (almost as much as they get in the metro). To drive a metro train, you take a 6-month course. The same goes for becoming a paperman, getting on a trolley, and for buses you need a professional license - again with a course. So after 6 months of retraining from some profession to a paperman, for example, you want 4,000 leva!?
Protests, riots and discontent - who goes on strike
Only people in state and municipal enterprises go on strike, right!? If we go back in time, when it comes to protests, they are always about salaries, but in this sector - the state sector. And a strike in the private sector... Why not? Because they will "kindly" show you the door. In the private sector, people leave on their own and look for a better place when they are not satisfied with their salary.
How long would the strikers in public transport in the private sector survive? Do they ask themselves this question. And what salaries would they receive for the qualifications they have.
It is clear that in this case, Mayor Terziev is being blackmailed. They got it once - in the fall. Now they want it again. If he gives it to them, they will want it again next year. The racket is unstoppable, and Terziev now has to choose - between money for kindergartens, for repairs, for garbage and... salaries. It is also interesting where the parties behind Vasil Terziev are, who can stand by him and bring out facts about what is happening and how. They are not there, they are hiding. But otherwise the mayor is theirs, right? On the other hand, Terziev, no matter how hard he tries to explain what is going on in his head, is not doing it in the best way. He is somehow not convincing, but that is how he is.
But what will happen if he starts signing dismissal orders!?
More than half of the strikers and protesters will realize this, because they know that only in the municipal enterprise will they be able to get such good money. They do not have the qualifications for private business. They will not get such money in the private sector. And they are squeezing to squeeze, but they are there. If they leave the “feeder“, they will take less money, their loans will be suspended, they will starve, but they will certainly not work less.
What did Filip Dimitrov do back in 1992.
Then again, an attempt was made through protests to overthrow the UDF government. He called on the military to drive the buses. And the protest, the strike – or whatever it was, died down.
And something else is very impressive. The mobility and flexibility of people. In the neighborhoods, workers are already uniting en masse, who is leaving by car to go to work. Respectively, and how they will get home. And they form groups, and the cars do not travel with one person inside. It will literally take people a month to optimally organize “shared transportation”, so that they can find a way. When people are pressed, they look for solutions. When you are in a state or municipal job, you want them. There is a difference, right?
So now the question is simple - will one working day be enough for Mayor Terziev to sign off on 7,000 layoffs, or will he allow them to continue blackmailing him. Will he call in the military!? The decision is his, and the suffering is for the people of Sofia.
Mayor Terziev to call in the military and sign off on 7,000 layoffs
