Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer faces a race against time to return in time for the team's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal, with the club already starting to make plans for the future of the position. Due to injury, Neuer missed the last two test matches of the German national team, as well as Bayer's defeats by Borussia Dortmund and Heidenheim.
Sky TV and Bild newspaper reported that the player resumed training on Sunday, but it is unclear whether he will be available for next week's meeting with Arsenal. A decision on Manuel Neuer's participation is expected to be made after the Munich club's training session on Monday before the trip to London.
Bayern's management are beginning to think about the future of the goalkeeper position, as the 38-year-old Neuer's contract expires next year. The team's second goalkeeper Sven Ulreich is 35 years old and also has a contract until 2025. Bayern signed Israeli youngster Daniel Peretz last summer on a contract until 2028 and the club are happy with his development, despite getting limited playing time.
"He's a great guy and trains like a maniac. He always has a smile on his face. We are very satisfied", commented Thomas Tuchel. 27-year-old Alexander Nübel, who arrived at Bayern in 2020, is on loan at Stuttgart this season. His contract with the Bundesliga champions is also until 2025.
