If you are one of those enthusiasts who keep boxes of old video cassettes in the basement and still feel nostalgic for the noisy “scrolling“ of the tape, RetroBox has something special for you. The young company presented a unique hybrid device that looks like it came straight out of a teenager's bedroom in 1999. The gadget combines a compact TV and a fully functional VHS player, promising to bring back the magic of the analog era to our digital everyday life.

RetroBox is a true paradise for lovers of vintage technology and retro gaming. Unlike modern TVs that require a bunch of adapters, this device is literally “decorated“ with classic interfaces. On its back panel you will find S-Video, the legendary RCA “bells“, component inputs and a coaxial port. In order not to be completely cut off from the present, the manufacturer has also added an HDMI port, allowing you to connect even a modern console to this small “time portal“.

The approach to the screen itself is interesting. Although the appearance imitates classic CRT televisions, a modern flat panel is hidden inside. However, the scientists and engineers behind the project have implemented software emulation that recreates the specific grainy structure and flickering of old screens. With native resolutions of 240p and 480i and support for 15 kHz horizontal refresh, RetroBox is precisely tuned for an authentic experience with original Nintendo or Sega consoles.

The project, led by Daniela and Chase, is already garnering a lot of attention on social media, despite still being in the early stages of production. The device comes in bright colors like red, pink, and green, complementing its pop-art aesthetic. While the $400 price tag may seem high compared to mainstream LED TVs, it’s an affordable way for collectors to get an all-in-one solution that doesn’t take up half a room and weigh 40 pounds.

The first units are now available for pre-order, and for the biggest fans, there’s also a special package that includes classic movies on cassette. RetroBox proves that in a world of 4K and streaming, the physical touch of the tape and the specific “click“ on the VCR still have their place under the sun.
