Is it possible for winter tires to “survive“ five or six seasons, instead of giving up on the third? The answer is a definite “yes”, but the secret lies not in the brand, but in our attitude towards this key element of road safety. Many drivers unwittingly shorten the life of the tread by half, making elementary but fatal mistakes.
The biggest enemy of rubber is not snow, but improper storage during the summer vacation of tires
The sun's rays, heat and sudden temperature fluctuations are real poison for the elasticity of the material. If you keep them on an open balcony or in a sheet metal garage, the rubber cracks and loses its qualities prematurely. A huge mistake is also to seal them tightly in plastic bags - the lack of ventilation creates condensation that slowly but surely corrodes the cord from the inside.
To double the life of the set, store them in a dry, dark and cool place. Before you "put them to sleep", wash them thoroughly from salt and chemicals, dry them well and arrange them horizontally, without pressing them with heavy objects. If you don't have such a place, most professional "tire hotels" are an excellent alternative.
Exploitation also hides its pitfalls. Did you know that sudden transitions from Arctic cold outside to "African" heat in heated underground parking lots age the material in a flash? These temperature shocks change the structure of the rubber. Add to this the low pressure - Soft tires overheat and wear unevenly, which is a surefire way to premature replacement.
Regular balancing and checking the geometry of the front axle are mandatory steps that we often neglect. Even a minimal deviation in convergence can "eat" the tread in a matter of months. If you rely on smooth driving without sudden stops and monitor the pressure according to the instructions, your tires will pay off with faithful service and predictable behavior in critical situations. After all, taking care of them is an investment not only in your wallet, but also in your own peace of mind on the road.
