The range of electric cars has increased significantly over the past 10 years. According to the latest DoE report, the average range of electric vehicles has reached a record 455 km for 2024 models, which is an increase of more than 20 km compared to 2023.
As reported by Ionity , the difference from the previous year seems insignificant, but the statistics for 10 years show significant growth. In 2014, the average range was only 135 km. The most popular at that time was the pioneer among electric cars in the mass segment - Nissan Leaf.
The rapid growth over the past 10 years is due to a technological breakthrough in battery production. In particular, in 2016 this indicator was already 351 km, and today's 455 km is a sign of the maturity of the electric car market, as experts believe that 480 km is the optimal range for most drivers, regardless of whether they drive an electric car or an internal combustion engine car.
They believe that this is enough to cover everyday needs, as well as convenient for long trips. That is why manufacturers are currently focusing on improving energy efficiency, reducing battery weight and improving charging infrastructure, rather than chasing mileage records.
By the way, the record for maximum range on a single charge belongs to the Lucid Air Dream Edition and is 837 km according to the EPA. In general, the fact that the range has tripled over the past 10 years shows how quickly automakers are developing electric mobility technologies.
