New speed cameras debut in Europe

The cameras are designed to operate autonomously, without constant police surveillance

Innovative cameras are emerging in Europe that can record violations by "looking" through the windows of vehicles. These devices were developed in the Netherlands and are already in the testing phase, with one of them, called Focusflitzer (Focused Radar), already in official use in the province of North Holland.

How do the new devices work?

The cameras are designed to operate autonomously, without constant police surveillance. They feature a telescopic mast on which a radar head is mounted, allowing for better monitoring of traffic, including higher vehicles such as trucks. Unlike older models that were easy to steal, the new design is more secure and effective.

The device uses a specially developed algorithm that "sees" in the interior of the car and automatically recognizes people who use electronic devices while driving. Most often, this concerns the use of smartphones. Each such violation is recorded, and the image is sent to a police database. After additional verification by an officer, violators are sent a fine of 430 euros.

Distribution in other countries

Although the cameras were initially introduced in the Netherlands, other European countries are also showing interest. It is known that the German police are the first customer. In order to use this technology, changes have even been made to the local regulatory framework in Germany. This means that it is likely that similar cameras will soon appear on German highways, as well as elsewhere in Europe.
