US President Donald Trump today called on the remaining NATO member states to stop buying Russian oil and to impose large-scale sanctions on Russia in order to end the war in Ukraine, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.
The American head of state made the call in a letter to the alliance countries.
"I will impose large sanctions on Russia when the remaining NATO countries agree to this and start doing so, and when the NATO countries stop buying Russian oil", Trump stated in the letter, distributed with a post on social networks. "If NATO does what I say, the war will end quickly", the American head of state added.
He suggested that NATO as an alliance impose tariffs of 50 to 100 percent on goods coming from China to weaken Beijing's economic influence on Russia.
Today's statement comes after Trump's previous threats of sanctions against Moscow and secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil - such as the largest buyers China and India - if progress is not made in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
The American president increased tariffs on Indian goods exported to the United States by another 25 percent due to India's continued imports of Russian oil. However, Trump did not take the same measures against China, Reuters points out.
