The Turkish state energy company Botas has signed a 20-year contract with the Mercuria trading group for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, BGNES reported, reports News.bg.
The agreement was finalized in New York during the UN General Assembly.
Under the deal, Turkey will import about 4 billion cubic meters of gas annually, totaling 70 billion cubic meters over the entire term of the contract. Deliveries will be made from American terminals, and regasification will be carried out at facilities in Turkey, Europe and North Africa.
Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized that the contract is aimed at diversification and energy security, as well as to strengthen trade between Turkey and the United States, which is expected to reach $ 100 billion.
The agreement comes at a time when the EU plans to stop importing Russian LNG by 2026, and Ankara has not yet renewed its contracts with “Gazprom“. Last year, Turkey imported approximately 50 billion cubic meters of gas, of which 40% was Russian.
In parallel, Botas also signed a preliminary contract with the Australian company Woodside Energy for the supply of 5.8 billion cubic meters of LNG for a period of nine years, starting in 2030.
