Russia accepts that US President Donald Trump remains committed to working to achieve peace in Ukraine. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by "Reuters", reports News.bg.

He made his statement after the American leader abruptly changed his rhetoric in favor of Kiev earlier this week.

Yesterday, after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump expressed confidence that Kiev can regain all the territories taken from Russia, which controls about 1/5 of the country, and that it must act immediately, as Moscow faces economic problems.

Trump's Vice President J.D. Vance warned that Trump is becoming "incredibly impatient" to Russia because they are not "putting enough on the negotiating table to end the war".

"If the Russians refuse to negotiate in good faith, I think that would be very, very bad for their country. That's what the president has clearly stated. This is not a change in position. This is an acknowledgement of the reality on the ground," Vance said.

Peskov noted that Russia did not view the US vice president's comment as contradicting Washington's stated desire to help end the war.

"We are actually seeing different rhetoric coming from Washington. "For now, we assume that Washington retains the political will and President Trump retains the political will to continue efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict in Ukraine," he said. "We support these efforts and Russia remains open to entering into peace talks," he said. "Some Russian nationalists suggest that Trump's statements indicate that he will distance himself from efforts to end the war, which has been going on for more than three years." The Kremlin has previously suggested that Trump's rhetoric was influenced by the fact that he had just met with Zelensky. It is unclear whether Trump will back up his words with a change in US action. Some analysts and European officials have suggested that his words are a signal to Europe that it is time for the continent's leaders to step up and do more to meet Kiev's needs for weapons and funding.
