From October 15, the Corinth Canal in Southern Greece will be closed for repairs, the Greek state television ERT reported, quoted by BTA.
The canal connects the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf and significantly shortens the route between the Ionian and Aegean Seas. The waterway will be open to shipping until 6 a.m. on October 14, and the date for its reopening will be announced at a later date.
The repair work will be aimed at restoring the canal's slopes. They will be carried out by the construction company “Actor“ and will have a budget of 34 million euros.
The Corinth Canal was built in the period 1881 – 1893. Due to its small width, it is now too narrow for most cargo ships and is used mainly by tourist vessels.
