French Prime Minister Sebastien Le Cornueu explained today the reasons why President Emmanuel Macron decided to re-appoint him as prime minister, just days after Le Cornueu resigned, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Le Cornueu, a close ally of Macron, took office four weeks ago but announced his resignation on Monday due to internal tensions within the government that have deepened France's political crisis.
However, it was confirmed yesterday that Le Cornueu is returning to the prime minister's post, with Macron giving him the task of negotiating with his political opponents to find a way out of months of instability.
The constitutional deadline for the prime minister to submit in parliament the state budget for next year, expires on Monday.
“I have no other ambitions than to get us out of this situation, which objectively is very difficult for all of us“, Le Corneille told journalists. “So I set myself a very clear task“, he added, referring to the budget submission. “The political forces will either help me and we will work together, or they will not“, the prime minister added.
The political impasse in France began after the early elections in the middle of last year, when none of the political camps managed to gain a majority in parliament. Although the left-wing alliance won the most seats, Macron refused to work with the left, leading to a series of appointments and resignations of prime ministers from centrist and conservative forces.
Lecornu, who must form a cabinet by Monday, hinted that he might seek support from the left. "I think we need a government that reflects the reality in parliament. This is essential, this is democracy," the prime minister stressed.
However, the leaders of the opposition left and right parties are preparing to submit a vote of no confidence in parliament against the re-appointed prime minister as early as Monday.
